How to use this trailer towing capacity calculator
Towing is limited by more than the advertised tow rating. Payload, tongue weight, gross combined weight, axle ratings, hitch ratings, tires, and the actual loaded trailer all matter.
How the estimate works
This calculator compares trailer GVWR with your tow rating, estimates tongue weight from the selected percentage, and checks whether occupants plus tongue weight fit within vehicle payload. If GCWR is entered, it also checks combined-weight headroom.
What the result does — and doesn’t — tell you
Use the result as a first-pass planning number. Real projects and equipment choices can change because of local prices, codes, product specifications, site access, material condition, labor, taxes, disposal fees, permitting, or engineering requirements.
- Recheck your measurements and use the actual project or equipment specifications whenever they are available.
- Compare the estimate with at least one real supplier, contractor, rental company, manufacturer chart, or local authority before committing money.
- Leave room for taxes, permits, delivery, disposal, site preparation, upgrades, or other items that are not visible in a simple online calculator.
Before you act on the result
Treat the output as a screening tool only. The lowest applicable rating controls, and the exact tow rating can vary by engine, axle ratio, drivetrain, cab, wheelbase, hitch, tires, and factory equipment. Verify the owner’s manual, certification labels, hitch ratings, brake requirements, and actual loaded scale weights.
Verify every vehicle rating before towing
- Vehicle max tow rating (lb): This is only one towing limit and should be verified for the exact vehicle configuration.
- Vehicle payload rating (lb): Payload must carry passengers, cargo, hitch equipment, and trailer tongue weight.
- People + cargo in vehicle (lb): Passengers and cargo consume payload before the trailer is attached.
- Trailer GVWR (lb): Using trailer GVWR is a conservative planning approach because it represents the trailer’s maximum rated loaded weight.
- Tongue weight (%): Tongue weight affects stability and consumes vehicle payload capacity.
- Vehicle GCWR (lb, optional; 0 to skip): GCWR limits the combined loaded vehicle and trailer weight.
- Vehicle curb weight (lb): Curb weight helps estimate combined weight when checking GCWR.
