Methodology & sources
How we turn public reference ranges, engineering relationships, and practical rules of thumb into planning calculators.
Our approach
These tools are designed for early planning. Where an exact mathematical relationship exists, the calculator uses that relationship directly. Where costs or field conditions vary, the tool deliberately returns a range instead of pretending there is one exact national price.
Key reference points used in Phase 1
- Dumpster sizing: standard residential container classes generally span 10–40 cubic yards; 20-yard containers are a common residential choice.
- Tree removal: current 2026 consumer cost references place typical professional removal in the high hundreds to low thousands depending on size and complexity.
- Pressure washing: current consumer pricing references commonly quote per-square-foot ranges, with minimum service charges on small jobs.
- Artificial turf: current installed-cost references commonly span roughly $10–$25 per square foot depending on turf quality and site prep.
- Concrete leveling: current references show broad per-square-foot ranges, with polyurethane lifting typically above basic grout/mudjacking.
- Slab leaks: current references show a wide range by repair method, access, and restoration requirements.
- Sewer replacement: current references commonly express replacement in dollars per linear foot, with trenchless feasibility and restoration affecting total cost.
- Septic systems: EPA materials emphasize that design and size vary by household, soil, site, system type, and local regulation; a 1,000-gallon tank is a common reference point for a three-bedroom home in EPA materials.
Important limitations
Cost calculators do not include every local tax, permit, disposal fee, code upgrade, engineering requirement, emergency premium, financing cost, or site condition. Sizing tools are not substitutes for manufacturer data, licensed design, code review, or professional load calculations where those are required.
