How to use this cake pan size converter

Cake recipes can often be scaled between pans by comparing pan surface area, assuming similar batter depth. This converter gives a recipe multiplier and an estimated new serving count.

How the estimate works

Round-pan area is calculated with πr²; square and rectangular pans use length × width. The new pan area divided by the original pan area becomes the recipe multiplier. Deep specialty pans may require additional adjustment.

What the result does — and doesn’t — tell you

Use the result as a first-pass planning number. Real projects and equipment choices can change because of local prices, codes, product specifications, site access, material condition, labor, taxes, disposal fees, permitting, or engineering requirements.

  • Compare the estimate with at least one real supplier, contractor, rental company, manufacturer chart, or local authority before committing money.

Before you act on the result

Scaling by pan area works best when the new pan produces a similar batter depth. Different pan materials, shapes, depths, and oven behavior can change the bake. Watch visual doneness cues and internal texture rather than assuming the original baking time will scale directly.

Use the conversion as a baking starting point

  • Original pan: Pan shape determines how surface area is calculated.
  • Original dimension A (in): Use the inside pan dimension when possible for a more useful area comparison.
  • Original dimension B (in; ignored for round/square): Rectangular pans need both length and width; round and square pans use one primary dimension here.
  • New pan: The destination pan shape determines the new batter footprint.
  • New dimension A (in): This dimension is used to calculate the destination pan area.
  • New dimension B (in; ignored for round/square): For rectangles, enter the second side of the new pan.
  • Original recipe servings: The converter scales the serving estimate by the same area ratio as the batter.

Does baking time stay the same?
Not necessarily. Batter depth, pan material, oven performance, and recipe type can change baking time.
Can I use this for loaf or Bundt pans?
Not reliably. Those shapes are better converted by pan volume rather than surface area alone.
